What are Residence Visas (Type D)?

Find out the main available routes to request your Portuguese Nationality

Residence visas are issued by Portuguese consulates and allow legal entry into Portugal for stays longer than 12 months.
They are intended for citizens from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland who wish to establish residence in the country.

After entering Portugal, the residence permit application must be submitted to AIMA

(Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum).

Main Types of Residence Visas

  • D1 Employment Visa: for applicants with a work contract or job offer in Portugal.

  • D2 Entrepreneur or Self-Employed Visa: for opening a company or independent business activity.

  • D3 Highly Qualified Professional Visa: for positions requiring advanced qualifications.

  • D4 Study, Internship or Volunteering Visa: for programs lasting more than one year.

  • D7 Passive Income Visa: for retirees or individuals with stable income from abroad.

  • DN Digital Nomad Visa: for remote workers earning at least €3,480 per month.

How the process works

  1. Initial visa application at the Portuguese Consulate in the country of origin.

  2. Visa issued with a 120-day validity (two entries).

  3. Appointment with AIMA to apply for the Residence Permit (valid for 2 years, renewable for 3).

  4. After 5 years of legal residence, the applicant may request permanent residence or Portuguese nationality.

Special Cases

  • Direct Residence Permit (without prior visa)

In certain cases provided by law, a residence permit may be granted without the need for a prior visa, such as for:

  • Highly qualified professionals

  • Higher education students

  • Family members of foreign residents in Portugal

  • ARI (Golden Visa)

Residence through investment in funds, science, culture, or job creation.
